Qld: Suburban Murri Court an Aussie first
The first Murrii (pron: MU-ree) Court in a state capital will be launched in Brisbanetoday with the aim of delivering greater justice to indigenous Australians.
Griffith University Gumurrii Centre director BONI ROBERTSON -- who helped establishthe court -- says it will be presided over by a magistrate.
The court will look at culturally appropriate sentencing options for indigenous peoplewho plead guilty.
It will deal with Magistrate's Court offences in a less formal manner than usual, withelders present to provide advice to the Magistrate and explain proceedings to offenders.
But the magistrate will still pass sentences appropriate to the severity of offences, reflecting community standards.
