QLD:Katter's gay brother speaks out

By Petrina Berry

BRISBANE, Aug 23 AAP - Bob Katter's gay brother has slammed his sibling's recent comments
against same-sex couples as hurtful and damaging.

Carl Katter openly criticised the independent federal MP in an interview with Network
Ten's George Negus.

He said his brother's comment that same sex marriage should not be treated seriously
was distressing.

Bob Katter made the comment at an anti-gay rally outside parliament house on August 16.

"Truly this proposition deserves to be laughed at and ridiculed. It doesn't serve any
serious treatment," he said to cheers and thunderous applause.

Carl Katter told Negus those were dangerous comments.

"It's hurtful, it's dangerous, it's damaging and it's really inappropriate," he said.

Carl Katter also said he's concerned about the impact the MP's comments will have on
the community.

"I don't understand his motives," he said.

"... I don't know how he can target a minority and persecute them in the way he has.

"His gross generalisations are inappropriate in today's society.

"Honestly, whenever I see him in the news I turn him off."

The interview will go to air at 6.30pm on Tuesday.

VIC:NAB move "nail in coffin" of exit fees

Consumer group Choice says a pledge by the National Australia Bank to pay the mortgage
exit fees of its two biggest rivals could be the nail in the coffin of exit fees.

NAB has vowed to reimburse 700 dollars to customers who switch to them from Westpac
or the Commonwealth Bank.

Choice spokesman CHRISTOPHER ZINN says the move throws fat on the fire on the issue
of competition between banks.

However he's urged customers to do the numbers before switching their home loan ..

to ensure any move will save money in the long term.

Mr ZINN says while the allure of not having to pay a 700 exit fee is attractive ..

it could lock customers into a more expensive contract.

Whas Australian newspapers say on Wednesday, April 30, 2009

AAP General News (Australia)
04-30-2009
Whas Australian newspapers say on Wednesday, April 30, 2009

SYDNEY, April 30 AAP - Thursday's The Australian says Australia appears well prepared
to deal with any pandemic of swine flu.

About 70 people are in isolation in every state and territory awaiting test results,
but no cases are yet confirmed.

For all the hysteria swirling around the issue, there is no cause for panic at this
stage, and, hopefully, not at any stage.

Now the internet has millions of references to it, some informative, many spurious.

As of late yesterday, Mexico remained the only nation with confirmed swine flu deaths,
believed to stand at just seven.

Hopefully, the matter will prove a false alarm.

The Australian's second editorial says like swine influenza, technologies such as Twitter
race around the world before spluttering out.

The Australian's final editorial says this month the Australian Building and Construction
Commission, the industry watchdog created by the Howard government, reported increased
intimidation and cost blowouts on Victorian construction sites. And yesterday building
union leader Dave Noonan warned of "an appropriate and concerted industrial campaign"

against the industrial laws that created the ABCC.

The unions have always hated the ABCC, created after the Cole royal commission reported
union activity was inflating building costs across the country.

The unions have always hated the ABCC, created after the Cole royal commission reported
union activity was inflating building costs across the country.

The Sydney Morning Herald says today the initiative of the NSW Business Chamber in
launching its campaign called "NSW: Reclaiming 1st" can only be applauded, and the Herald
lends its full encouragement.

The latest power blackout to hit the centre of Sydney has only emphasised the failing
condition of our infrastructure and the flagging energy in a state we would like to regard
as the engine-room of Australia's economy.

The campaign is intended to bring back a holistic approach to the state's development.

While Labor is floundering and should be heading towards a well-deserved election defeat
in March 2011, it is by no means clear that the Liberal-National opposition is ready with
better alternatives.

The SMH's second editorial says as the 10th anniversary approaches of Australia's republic
referendum in November 1999, in which the proposal failed to pass, eddies are stirring
to bring the subject back to life.

But Kevin Rudd, after earlier encouraging a fresh look at the republic, is now sending
signals that he would prefer to leave it in a coma. This would be a mistake.

Sydney's The Daily Telegraph says the price of patriotism is vaulting beyond the means
of ordinary Aussies, who lately have been hit by record lamb costs. Other items, particularly
across the meat range, are also leaping in price.

Perhaps the Government should launch a hard-hitting website that exposes grocery prices.

Armed with this information, cash-strapped consumers could choose where to shop in order
to save the most money.

No supermarket would dare inflate its prices to unreasonable levels while an official
government website was closely watching them.

The Tele's second editorial says Australia is yet to record its first confirmed case
of swine flu.

Should the worst happen and we come under attack, you'll be serving your city well
by remaining calm.

In its final piece the Tele says you can never find a taxi when you really need one.

Except if you're fleeing the scene of a murderous assault or you're a convicted drug dealer
making a prison break. These people must be excellent tippers.

The Herald Sun's editorial credits the newspaper with improving the food served to
Diggers in Afghanistan.

The editorial said soldiers have been served "vegetable gruel and overcooked meat in
greasy gravy" but will now "be treated to food fit for fighting men, care of the Herald
Sun".

"On Monday, we called on the government to get rid of the swill and do better for troops
putting their lives on the line," the editorial said.

"Yesterday, we were able to report that Australian Army cooks will now serve up a healthy
menu at the Tarin Kowt base.

"While we are appreciative of the government's quick response to our call for a square-meal
for the Diggers, this is the least the government can do as it prepares to send more troops
to Afghanistan."

Australia must push its allies to review policies on the war in Afghanistan, the editorial said.

Australia has just announced a further deployment of 450 troops to Afghanistan in a
new bid to counter Taliban insurgency, the editorial said.

But Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has previously questioned the war's direction, it said.

"The troubling point about this deployment is that, as Mr Rudd says, `the current civilian
and military strategy is not working. If anything, security in Afghanistan is deteriorating'.

"Australia must engage the US and other allies in constant review of the strategy in
Afghanistan and Pakistan to ensure Australians are not locked into a long and fruitless
war."

Brisbane's The Courier Mail today says the swine flu threat is exactly the sort of
crisis that can define a leader.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh will need to navigate these waters carefully and also
get across the point that the vaccinations currently on offer do not protect against swine
flu.

The Courier Mail's second editorial says the new Department of Employment, Economic
Development and Innovation is set to be the engine room of job creation strategy over
the next three years.

Yet, instead of being preoccupied with what the department will do to help the promise
of 100,000 jobs, its executives are focused on matters such as the adoption of a new corporate
identity and `persona'.

Stop the mumbo jumbo and get to work.

He's told ABC radio he wouldn't criticise the IOC if it scraps our event .. given the
trouble the relay's had so far.

And he says while the demonstrations have been criticised for being violent .. it's

Fed: Indonesian boatpeople to be sent back home

CANBERRA, Dec 7 AAP - Sixteen Indonesians detained on Christmas Island are to be returned
to Indonesia after interviews and health checks, Immigration Minister Chris Evans said
today.

Their claim to be economic refugees has been rejected as a legitimate reason for refugee status.

The three men, three women and 10 children were rescued from a leaking fishing boat
in the Timor Sea on November 20 after their stricken vessel pulled up alongside the Jabiru
Venture oil ship, 600km west of Darwin.

The families, from the Indonesian island of Roti, said they had been suffering economic
losses from Australia's crackdown on illegal fishing in the region and had no choice but
to flee their homeland.

But Senator Evans said his department had carefully explored with the group their reasons
for travelling to Australia.

"On the information provided, my department is satisfied that they have not raised
issues which might engage Australia's protection obligations," he said in a statement.

"This represents a firm but fair approach to the orderly migration of people to Australia."

Senator Evans said the asylum seekers had been treated fairly and been dealt with appropriately.

"They simply have not engaged our protection obligations under the Refugees Convention," he said.

"My department is making arrangements to return the group in coordination with the
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Indonesian government as soon as possible."

Senator Evans said he was a great supporter of the Refugees Convention and Australia
was among the top three resettlement countries in the world.

"However, people from other countries do not have a right to stay in Australia just
because they would be economically better off here," he said.

CANBERRA, April 25 AAP - Young and old are braving a wet start to Anzac Day in Canberra
to pay their respects to Australia's war dead.

Governor-General Michael Jeffery is expected to join the crowd of more than 20,000
for today's service at the Australian War Memorial, 92 years after the first Anzacs began
their ill-fated Gallipoli campaign.

But Major General Jeffery is attending the service purely as a veteran.

He served with the Australian army in Malaya, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam,
where he was awarded the Military Cross and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

Australian army chaplain Greg Flynn will lead the prayers at the dawn service, while
the Royal Military College of Australia band will perform the national anthem.

Maj-Gen Jeffery will give the commemorative address at the full national Anzac Day

World: The US Federal Reserve's decision to pause in its two-year policy of higher
interest rates may have been vindicated by a surprising drop in wholesale prices and yet
more dour news from the housing market.

Markets: The Australian sharemarket shrugs aside a drop in consumer confidence and
returns to positive territory.

NSW: Needy slip through the cracks due to funding shortages

Almost three quarters of non-government community service agencies are failing to meet
demands for their services because of funding shortages and risk closure as a result.

The Australian Community Sector Survey 2005 reveals 74 per cent of such community service
agencies were unable to attend all the people seeking their services during 2003-04.

The Council of Social Service of New South Wales says the biggest increases in the
incidence of people being turned away are in the areas of child care, housing assistance,
community legal and financial and material support services.

NCOSS director GARY MOORE says the demand for services is outweighing income, with
62 per cent of respondents indicating that income for the same period had not met costs.

Mr MOORE says the survey results suggest the long term viability of many agencies may
be in jeopardy unless they receive concerted government and community sector action.

The survey shows the agencies provided nearly 11 per cent more services than in the
previous 12 months.

Mr MOORE says the survey highlights the need for a commitment to more funds and better
social and economic policies.

LIFE'S NOT ALL PLANE SAILING.(the world's best and worst airports)(Brief Article)

Our special guest writer TAURUS(*) has seen a lot of airports -- and doesn't like what he sees

FROM DACCA to Lima, Dalian to London, over the next few decades airports throughout Asia and the world will become more and more important as elements of economic infrastructure.

This will be so for almost all countries, large and small.

The more mobile world will see a greater percentage of the population of all countries flying and crowding airports. There will also be an expansion in related groupings, such as the non-travelling airport visitor.

Go to Dacca, Bangladesh, and you will see thousands of people around the airport, just visiting, just watching the action.

To digress, dare I say it is the perfect tonic for an unpopular politician or bureaucrat: fly into Dacca Airport and assume the watching hordes are there to salute your arrival!

A snapshot of airports around the world quickly throws up the good, the bad and the ugly.

First, to deal with the ugly, that can safely be said to be all of them by degrees. While it is true modern architecture abounds in all the new airports, few seek to be in sympathy with their surrounds, with the exception of one or two such as Paro Bhutan. It has terminal buildings in the Bhutanese mode, it has the advantage of being a small airport with a couple of flights each day, and a runway cunningly fitted into the floor of the Par Valley.

Second, the good or best category is dominated by Changi Airport, Singapore, often winning worldwide prizes for excellence and handling thousands daily with efficiency and even kindness.

The VIP terminal facilities in Singapore Airport are the best. They are luxurious but, importantly, designed to allow High Commissioners and Ambassadors to slip away quickly to golf courses or tennis courts after farewelling a Minister or VIP.

The good or very good from the passenger point of view are really few and far between. Yes, Singapore again, and the new airport at KL but its location is many kilometres from downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Third, the bad are many -- too many to detail and are located in just about every multiple airport country around the world. But I will pick on one.

Take spectacular Queenstown Airport in the unforgettable South Island New Zealand Alps. A bit like Bhutan, the runway is cunningly placed in difficult terrain between two ski resorts just north of the town, with Lake Wakatipu to admire nearby.

However, current arrangements provide for literal containerisation of international passengers departing on flights direct from Queenstown to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Worst still, in that brilliant way duty managers allow too often to happen, passengers are loaded into the cramped container on average a good half hour before being released to the tarmac for boarding.

Now, before the excuses are rolled out in relation to the need to process passengers through immigration and customs, Queenstown tourist officials should check the exact time between last passenger processed into the container for flight XYZ and first passenger released to tarmac.

Now, I acknowledge that not all airports can be modern, oversized and comfortable. But matters are often made a great deal worse by slack micro-management practices adding to the burden.

Please go to Queenstown because the scenery in all seasons is truly spectacular -- and no doubt management will improve the airport terminal in due course. As a bonus, ride the Lake Steamer or the extraordinary nearby Kingston Flyer steam train.

Having squared things With Queenstown New Zealand, let me nominate the cardinal rules for big airports to succeed from the passenger view in the second century of aviation.

First, if not already provided, there must be a passenger rail connection direct to airport. It is the only way to cater for growing traveller numbers in the future.

In these stakes, Charles De Gaulle Paris leads the way with both TGV and RER rail. Even Heathrow now has two rail connections, Sydney has just opened one, while Brisbane and Singapore will have rail connections in the near future.

Second, fine tune aircraft utilisation to provide long-term flexibility before noisy minority groups -- including those who cheerfully use the airport to travel regularly -- impose legislative caps on operations, involving more curfews.

Third, soften terminal images and vistas, and abandon the concept that sweeping oversized halls and passenger concourses are automatically the best way forward.

Space and plenty of space is needed in big airports, including for expansion, but the next wave of winning airport architects will be those successfully twinning size for capacity with boutique vistas.

In addition, a more enlightened range of services is required at the big hub airports and these should range from efficient internet booth connections through to well-equipped gymnasiums and diverse retail outlets.

There's one last, albeit low, priority: ensure that there are convenient escape hatches from VIP lounges, which are too often cocooned from the real world of the terminal. After all, not all Ministers are enthralled by isolated VIP lounges.

Airports are not by choice where people want to spend an enormous amount of time, but the reality is more and more people from all walks of life will be doing so. So let's see if we can make them less awful.

RFE SOCIAL MEDIA ANALYST SHARES DIGITAL LITERACY EXPERTISE.

WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty:

Camilla Hawthorne, a new media analyst for RFE, was recently asked to share her expertise and skills in social media and online activism at TechCamp training sessions in both Lithuania and Moldova. She was joined at the Vilnius camp by RFE's Kenan Aliyev and Mardo Soghom.

"These are the countries we broadcast to day in and day out, so to be able to share and work with different community members was very important and rewarding," Hawthorne said.

About 80 activists from civil society organizations (CSOs) representing Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the countries of the Balkan region, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine participated in TechCamp: Vilnius on June 29-30, where they focused on how technology can be used to facilitate citizen journalism and further their objectives for strong democracies and open societies. The training session in Chisinau on July 15-16 gave representatives of Moldovan CSOs a chance to learn how technology can be used to make government data accessible, promote transparency, and empower citizens.

According to Hawthorne, "We [RFE] were able to bring the knowledge we have working with our broadcast countries combined with the how-to of new media, activist reporting, Internet censorship and promoting media freedom."

"The role of the Internet for social change is really starting to reveal itself," Hawthorne said. "Most of the people [at the sessions] were being introduced to a new world of tools and RFE was able to sit down with people from human rights organizations and share our expertise. It was powerful that they were able to walk away with new knowledge on how to work with their citizenry, get the message out and work with their governments."

Last week, Hawthorne was interviewed on "The Blender," the weekly RFE podcast, where she discussed technological opportunities as well as challenges facing online activists across the world. Highlights of TechCamp can be viewed through Storify. To see more tweets from this and other, along with future TechCamps, follow #techcamp on Twitter.

TechCamp is a global program under U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Civil Society 2.0 initiative, which is an effort to galvanize the technology community to assist civil society organizations around the globe by providing capabilities, resources and assistance to enable them to harness digital media and Internet circumvention tool (ICT) advances in order to build their digital capacity and online activism efforts. CSOs support the collective values and beliefs that non-governmental communities have for the promotion of a healthy democracy.

Zinger ready to play the game.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

WHETHER it's pulling shirts on a football pitch, nipping your opponent in a rugby scrum or sledging in the middle of the cricket field, gamesmanship is part and parcel of sport. And with a thrilling weekend of Ryder Cup action upon us, both teams are sure to be plotting ways of getting one over each other in golf's hotly-contested showdown between USA and Europe. The Americans, underdogs for the clash at Valhalla, Kentucky, will be pulling out all the stops to try and regain the Cup they have not held since losing it in 2002.

And while stopping short of admitting his team, and Europe, will be getting their 'leather wedges' out and kicking their opponents' balls into bunkers and behind trees, US team captain Paul Azinger admitted the dirty tricks side of golf is "alive and well", and he's ready for it.

Azinger famously labelled European legend Seve Ballesteros "the king of gamesmanship" back in 1991 at Kiwah Island.

Ballesteros was known for developing an annoying cough during matches, and also for winding up opponents by standing in their vision as they putted. The United States were guilty of it at Brookline in 1999 when their players ran all over the 17th green after Justin Leonard had holed a long putt in his match with Jose Maria Olazabal, despite the Spaniard still having to putt. We've all done it. Whether it's standing behind your opponent when he's putting or dropping in a little "watch out for that pond on the left" as he gets ready to tee off, gamesmanship is alive at all levels of golf.It could well be a bone of contention this weekend, especially as other sports are looking to clean up their act - football in the UK has recently launched a "Respect" campaign towards officials. But some feel it is part of the Ryder Cup, and helps to make the event what it is.Former US Ryder Cup player Larry Nelson once joked: "When it doesn't happen in the Ryder Cup matches you almost feel cheated."And while stopping short of naming names and their underhand tactics on the course, Azinger admits gamesmanship will have a part to play at Valhalla."You don't always see it. It can be a spoken word or early walking in the middle of a backswing," he said."I could mention things, but I don't want to start an international incident."I didn't do it because I never wanted to give anybody more reason to beat me."But that won't stop his players from adopting it.And one European player who is sure to try it on a bit is Ian Poulter.Prior to his debut at Oakland Hills in 2004, Poulter said: "I'm into more subtle things. I wouldn't want to step over the line, but I definitely plan to get under their skin."Now he is back for more after being given a wild card.Like it loath it, gamesmanship will play a part at Valhalla.Let the games begin.

Gabby's fury over online smears.(News)

Byline: John Cooper

TV PRESENTER Gabby Logan has hit back at internet lies that she had an affair with her colleague, Alan Shearer.

She said that it was 'devastating and hurtful' that she was being smeared online with false claims that she tried to hide the non-existent relationship by obtaining a privacy injunction.

Mrs Logan often appears alongside Shearer on BBC's Match Of The Day when Gary Lineker is absent. The mother of two became a victim of the privacy row after a British judge granted an unprecedented worldwide gagging order to a married TV star, permanently banning publication of pictures of him with a woman.

Internet and Twitter gossips seized on the entirely false idea that the BBC sports presenter has had an affair with pundit and former England football captain Mr Shearer.

Yesterday, she said: 'I'm a happily married and faithful wife. It is devastating and hurtful that malicious lies can be circulated on the internet without control when people who genuinely do have something to hide can be protected by court rulings.' She has been married for nearly a decade to former Scotland rugby international Kenny Logan, and the couple have five-year-old twins. She and Mr Shearer are not the only figures to have their reputations unfairly damaged while judges protect the rich and powerful from the consequences of their sexual misbehaviour.

Film star Ewan McGregor has been wrongly named on the internet as the actor who won a privacy injunction to hide his relationship with a prostitute used by footballer Wayne Rooney.

A further row developed at Westminster yesterday after a backbencher told the House Of Commons that there is now a serving MP who has taken out a super-injunction to hide his personal life. Former ITV host Mrs Logan is a presenter of BBC One's Final Score programme. She first found it necessary to deny the rumours about an affair last week when Twitter gossip began to spread. Since then the level of internet speculation has grown swiftly.

Mrs Logan has told Twitter followers that she has no use for privacy injunctions. She said: 'I have never had need or desire to use one, I think it's potentially damaging for free speech and would appear to be a tool for the rich.' Super-injunctions are so secret that it is a crime to reveal their existence, but one can currently be reported. Because so many politicians and lawyers regard super-injunctions as sinister, privacy judges have turned to a new form of injunction.

In these, the gagging order itself and some facts can be reported, but not the names of those involved. This has now led to the smearing of Mrs Logan.

Will it be left to the Jews to spring Alan Gross?(OPINIONS)

Since the demise of Cuba's Soviet protector nearly two decades ago, the lone communist dictatorship in the Western Hemisphere has become almost an afterthought in Washington, the media and the public. Aside from the yawning transition from Fidel to brother Raul, Cuba hasn't exactly been on anyone's radar of late.

Now just when we thought that the Cuban dilemma would gradually give way to reconciliation with the United States, along comes a painful reminder that there's still one country in our hemisphere that hasn't yet heard that the Cold War is over and the communists lost.

A 61-year-old American Jew named Alan Gross was sentenced last week by a kangaroo court in Havana to 15 years in Cuba's notorious Villa Marista prison "for acts against the independence and territorial integrity of the state." Gross was arrested by Cuban security in December 2009 at Havana's Jose Marti Airport on charges of spying for the American government. He had been to Cuba several times working for Development Alternatives, a Maryland-based contractor for the US Agency for International Development. This was part of the Cuban Democracy Program set up by the Clinton Administration to deliver "humanitarian aid and information" to "human rights and political activists."

At some point, Gross veered away from USAID's goal of working with the Cuban "human rights and political activists" and turned his focus to the Jewish community of Cuba. Prior to his arrest, he would use his visits to bring over cell phones and computer equipment. Numbering about 1,500, Cuba's Jews are one of the most isolated Jewish communities in the world. Cuba has no diplomatic ties with Israel; and the US enforces a travel and trade ban with Cuba.

Presumably, Gross sought to reconnect the Cuban Jewish community with the rest of the world. For this he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which for a 61-year-old man amounts to a life sentence. Gross already had been languishing in jail for 15 months when he went before a tribunal of Cuban judges (no jury). His health had deteriorated, and he had lost 90 pounds. Meanwhile, compounding his family's misfortunes, his daughter back in the United States was stricken with cancer

The Obama Administration, which had previously softened its stance toward Cuba, issued a protest, coming directly from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. And the Cubans threw it back, claiming Gross was an American spy. So much for Barack Obama's get-nice policy toward Cuba.

It would be easy to point the anti-Semitic finger at the Castro brothers. But the fact is that the Castros went after Gross primarily because he was attempting to introduce a segment of the Cuban population to the Internet and cell phones. To a totalitarian regime devoted to its own survival, controlling the flow of information is of paramount importance. The Internet and cell phones have been potent tools in uprisings around the world. Once they're introduced, they're almost impossible to shove back in the box.

The second reason the Cuban communists targeted Gross is because they view him as an extension of a hostile US government that has for decades been trying to subvert the Castro regime. To them USAID is barely distinguishable from the CIA--and the Internet a tool for capitalist propaganda.

The third reason for Gross' plight is simply that he was a convenient target. He had been back and forth to Cuba several times, his activities carefully monitored by the regime.

Gross' show trial and sentence served as a warning to the Cuban people of what they risked for even appearing to contradict or challenge the regime. The message is clear: Stay away from Americans, especially those bearing high-tech gifts. It seems to be working, as the Cuban Jewish community has already disavowed any ties to Gross.

Which leads us to the question of what do the Castro brothers want from the US government in return for Alan Gross?

It's first necessary to understand what they don't want--a matter about which both Obama and Clinton seem to be clueless. The Castros don't want open trade with the US, travel restrictions lifted between the US and Cuba or diplomatic relations. American tourists and business people, Cuban-American exiles traveling back home, an extensive US diplomatic presence--all of this is a threat to the regime. For more than six decades, the Cuban communists have rallied their subjects by pointing north to the Yankee bogeyman.

Simply put, the Castros want the Americans to stay out of Cuba. They want the Obama administration to curtail the USAID's Cuban Democracy Program. Additionally, they may want the return of The Cuban Five--five agents who, unlike Gross, were real spies, caught, tried and convicted in the US about 15 years ago and now serving long prison sentences. In Cuba, they're revered as martyrs.

Since the Castros view Obama as a political lightweight, they may well also try to bully him for other concessions, such as clamping down on right-wing Cuban exiles in Florida and pulling the plug on Radio Free Cuba.

Jimmy Carter has been dispatched (or has dispatched himself) to Cuba this week. If he returns with Alan Gross, he'll be lauded as a hero, and the Castro brothers will score points on the world stage by releasing a frail American Jew for humanitarian reasons. It will be left to the pundits to figure out what the communists got in return.

If the former president returns without Gross, it would signal that negotiations for his release could drag on indefinitely. It would then be up to the international Jewish community to mobilize and play the Jewish political prisoner card. Jewish leaders and their networks could stage very public protests at the UN and Cuban diplomatic posts, accusing the Castro regime of anti-Semitism.

The sight of Jews parading before the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City or the Cuban consulate in Montreal might be too much for the Castros to bear, especially since Fidel has apparently been extra-sensitive toward the Jews, as evidenced by his rare public berating of his friend Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for the Iranian leader's anti-Semitism.

Watch for Jimmy Carter in Cuba. If he returns home alone, then it's time for American Jews to organize with our brethren in Canada and Latin America, and get Alan Gross out of Cuba. Whatever it takes.

(BW)(CA-OPENWAVE-SYSTEMS)(OPWV.NASDAQ) Openwave Announces Smart User Repository for Mobile Operators to Manage Rising Network Traffic

Latest Openwave Offering Delivers Real-time User Profiles and Policies for Operators Implementing User Profile Repository or User Data Repository Solutions

High-Tech Writers CTIA Wireless 2010

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE) - Mar. 23, 2010--Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:OPWV), a global software innovator delivering context-aware mediation and messaging solutions, today announced the launch of its Openwave Smart User Repository for operators, a highly scalable, highly reliable user data storage solution built on the proven foundation of Openwave's directory technology. Smart User Repository offers high speed, low latency user profile and policy access that is specifically designed to assist operators in managing their increasing data traffic. Because of its highly scalable and reliable architecture, Openwave's Smart User Repository is an excellent candidate for operators' 3GPP user profile repository (UPR) and user data repository (UDR) requirements, particularly as operators move quickly to deploy policy infrastructure addressing the increasing traffic loads brought about by the data tsunami.

"As operators continue to witness unprecedented data traffic volumes, it is incumbent upon them to consider integrated policy management tools that will help them rapidly access user profile and policy information as is common in the web world," said John Giere, senior vice president of products and marketing at Openwave. "One of our longstanding tier-one North American operators has already deployed our repository and is currently processing in excess of 2.5 billion queries a day."

Openwave Smart User RepositorySmart User Repository's intelligent and flexible architecture allows for configurable deployments based on the respective operator's environment and traffic profile. Openwave's previous version of the offering, Openwave? Directory, provides an easy transition for operators evaluating a replacement path for systems that are not scalable. Key benefits of Smart User Repository include: Intelligent Architecture ? The decoupling of read and write operations can provide a lightweight Master/Replica architecture which allows for separate scaling of these characteristics as needs arise.

Replicas can be diskless for better performance and lower cost.

Scalability ? Scalability based on the loose coupling between the Master(s) and Replica(s). The lightweight replication mechanism can ensure low replication load on the Master(s) to maintain a linear cost of growing the system.

Availability/Reliability - Smart User Repository's architecture allows the operator to define different levels of spare capacity depending on the criticality of the application. The repository's predecessor, Openwave Directory, has demonstrated greater than 99.999% availability over the last five years at our largest deployment.

Low Latency - The lightweight replication mechanism of the Smart User Repository enables implementation of geo-distribution working to ensure low latency across wide areas. Replicas can serve single entry requests in less than three milliseconds depending on the hardware platform.

Continuous Service Operation During Upgrades - The loosely coupled architecture of the Smart User Repository is expected to provide the resilience and flexibility needed to manage the system on a day-to-day basis. Automatic distribution of schema updates can also facilitate daily management of the data model, even for widely distributed systems.

Lucent Offers Inferno Operating System With Sun Solaris Software; Allows Sun Ultra Enterprise Servers To Host Inferno-Based Applications.

MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1997--Lucent Technologies and Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that Lucent's Inferno Network Operating System is now available for Sun's Solaris 2.6. Lucent will deliver its Inferno network operating system for Sun(TM) Solaris(TM) software, creating a complete, secure end-to-end network solution for information appliances and distributed enterprise computing.

This means that telecommunications companies and other network service operators can deploy Inferno's networking technology across Sun's Ultra(TM) Enterprise(TM) family -- the industry's most scalable server platform, ranging from workgroup servers to the 64-way Ultra Enterprise 10000 enterprise-class server. Users can deploy Inferno on Solaris on existing Sun servers that support Solaris 2.6, thus maximizing their hardware investment. The solution maximizes the capabilities of an Inferno-enabled end device by employing the resources of the entire network.

The integrated solution was packaged jointly by Lucent Technologies and Sun Microsystems.

"Combining Inferno's secure inter-networking, and Solaris 2.6, the market leading server platform, is a key step in Lucent's efforts to lead the convergence of voice and data," said Gerry Butters, president of North America, Lucent Technologies Network Systems. "Together, Lucent Technologies and Sun Microsystems will make data networking as simple and as reliable as today's voice networks."

"Inferno's distributed computing architecture, combined with the scalability and robustness of the Sun Ultra Enterprise server line, is an excellent solution. It gives telecom and network operators the flexibility to introduce Inferno-based applications such as Web phones," said Chris Hurst, vice president of worldwide telecommunications and cable market development at Sun Microsystems.

The combination of Inferno and Solaris is the second step in an ongoing Lucent and Sun alliance to provide network solutions in the consumer and enterprise arenas. In August, Lucent announced that Inferno supports Sun's PersonalJava(TM) applications in its upcoming Inferno Release 2.0.

Customers interested in obtaining an Inferno Development Kit should call 1-888-LUCENT8. Evaluation copies of the product and application demonstrations are available on the World Wide Web at http://www.lucent.com/inferno.

Inferno 1.1 is a full service inter-networking operating system that allows Inferno-enabled devices to share resources over any network. Designed to require minimal hardware, the entire native Inferno software solution, including basic applications, can run comfortably in as little as one megabyte of memory. This makes Inferno ideal for use with inexpensive devices, Internet terminals, set-top boxes, advanced telephones, hand-held devices, and network computers. In addition, Inferno's design includes a security and authentication feature at the operating system level. Inferno is easy to develop, deploy, expand, manage, and afford.
