Lucent Offers Inferno Operating System With Sun Solaris Software; Allows Sun Ultra Enterprise Servers To Host Inferno-Based Applications.

MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1997--Lucent Technologies and Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that Lucent's Inferno Network Operating System is now available for Sun's Solaris 2.6. Lucent will deliver its Inferno network operating system for Sun(TM) Solaris(TM) software, creating a complete, secure end-to-end network solution for information appliances and distributed enterprise computing.

This means that telecommunications companies and other network service operators can deploy Inferno's networking technology across Sun's Ultra(TM) Enterprise(TM) family -- the industry's most scalable server platform, ranging from workgroup servers to the 64-way Ultra Enterprise 10000 enterprise-class server. Users can deploy Inferno on Solaris on existing Sun servers that support Solaris 2.6, thus maximizing their hardware investment. The solution maximizes the capabilities of an Inferno-enabled end device by employing the resources of the entire network.

The integrated solution was packaged jointly by Lucent Technologies and Sun Microsystems.

"Combining Inferno's secure inter-networking, and Solaris 2.6, the market leading server platform, is a key step in Lucent's efforts to lead the convergence of voice and data," said Gerry Butters, president of North America, Lucent Technologies Network Systems. "Together, Lucent Technologies and Sun Microsystems will make data networking as simple and as reliable as today's voice networks."

"Inferno's distributed computing architecture, combined with the scalability and robustness of the Sun Ultra Enterprise server line, is an excellent solution. It gives telecom and network operators the flexibility to introduce Inferno-based applications such as Web phones," said Chris Hurst, vice president of worldwide telecommunications and cable market development at Sun Microsystems.

The combination of Inferno and Solaris is the second step in an ongoing Lucent and Sun alliance to provide network solutions in the consumer and enterprise arenas. In August, Lucent announced that Inferno supports Sun's PersonalJava(TM) applications in its upcoming Inferno Release 2.0.

Inferno 1.1 is a full service inter-networking operating system that allows Inferno-enabled devices to share resources over any network. Designed to require minimal hardware, the entire native Inferno software solution, including basic applications, can run comfortably in as little as one megabyte of memory. This makes Inferno ideal for use with inexpensive devices, Internet terminals, set-top boxes, advanced telephones, hand-held devices, and network computers. In addition, Inferno's design includes a security and authentication feature at the operating system level. Inferno is easy to develop, deploy, expand, manage, and afford.
