Fed: Thousands gather for Canberra dawn service

CANBERRA, April 25 AAP - Young and old are braving a wet start to Anzac Day in Canberra
to pay their respects to Australia's war dead.

Governor-General Michael Jeffery is expected to join the crowd of more than 20,000
for today's service at the Australian War Memorial, 92 years after the first Anzacs began
their ill-fated Gallipoli campaign.

But Major General Jeffery is attending the service purely as a veteran.

He served with the Australian army in Malaya, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam,
where he was awarded the Military Cross and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

Australian army chaplain Greg Flynn will lead the prayers at the dawn service, while
the Royal Military College of Australia band will perform the national anthem.

Maj-Gen Jeffery will give the commemorative address at the full national Anzac Day
service in Canberra later this morning.
