NSW: WorkCover raises fears over illegal fireworks
SYDNEY, Dec 31 AAP - WorkCover NSW today raised fears that people who bought fireworks
illegally may ignite them despite a total fire ban.
A shop near Newcastle has sold 600 packets of fireworks to people without permits,
WorkCover northern district manager Alan Kemp said today.
The shop was licensed to sell fireworks but was prohibited from selling them to people
who did not have a permit, he said.
Mr Kemp said it would be illegal for any of the buyers to set off the fireworks because
not only did they not have the permits but there was also a total fire ban.
"There's about 600 people out there that may let them off on a total fire ban day," he said.
A police spokeswoman confirmed that fireworks were seized from a person leaving the
shop who had them without a permit.
A WorkCover investigation was under way.
